JANUARY BLOG

Well, January 2009 has come and gone! Yes, the end of school holidays and a 'sense' of back to
the grind!? Not so in Noosa....

Despite the fact many people have got back into the 'grind of work', the atmosphere in and around Noosa
always has a very different feel, it's one of positive, friendly, lay back holiday mode, which continues ALL year!!
That's what make this region SO special....always friendly smiling faces to see. It's just paradise!

Whilst there is always something to do in Noosa, some organised events were also very popular....
Early January saw The Great Noosa Camp Out music festival and camping at Doonan in the Hinterland, including tree planting, supporting our Biosphere.

The Ginger Flower & Food Festival,  the Buderim Ginger Factory in Yandina, hosted the four day spectacular Ginger flower presentation, now in it's fourteenth year, with the new Buderim Ginger Cooking School proving to be extremely popular!

Ah...Australia Day! Always a proud day! And again celebrated in style with the Haviananas Thong Challenge at Noosa main beach, in aid of the 'Starlight Foundation' and Noosa Heads Surf Club Nippers program, with more than $10,000 being raised.  An amazing 662 people joined in ( world record is 863!!)
So well done there.
The much loved 'barbeque' was seen everywhere! In parks, back yards, on the beach with proud aussies enjoying a snag in bread  (or prawn!) while dressed in their Aussie hats, t shirts, even 'aussie flag' face paintings, flags flapping in the breeze from 4 x 4 truck windows!!....gotta love it! Go Aussie! Oy, Oy, Oy!

Other Australia Day celebrations included a new coastwide awards program, with honours being presented by Mayor Bob Abbott paying tribute to those people who made extraordinary contributions to our community. More than 100 nominations came in! The honours were handed out in Noosaville Lions Park on Sunday.

Mount Coolum's Dr Lisa Chandler won the creative art award for her work in the arts, and is an educator, gallery director, curator, graphic designer and was foundation director of the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery.
Cooroy's Ritek Building Solutions won an economical award, Coolum's District Coast Care Group won an environmental award, Roger Newton won sport & recreational award for his contribution to health, well being and bike education. Dr Arthur Harrold - founder of Noosa Parks Association was honoured for his work toward bettering the environment, Leanne Walsh's community service endeavours, named a winner for her work establishing Butterfly Kids, to improve the lives of local disabled children.
Gary Dun and Ernie Benn were highly commended in community service category for their work over many years. Shirley Page was awarded for promoting civic pride, hospitality, friendship and caring, while siblings Nathanael and Joanne Ford were both highly commended for their fund raising efforts for war veterans.
The Noosa Waters Residence Association was honoured for its work toward bettering the Noosa Waters streetscape. Congratulations and well done to everyone!
